Today, information design is often perceived as a young and innovative design discipline. However, even prehistoric cave paintings can be interpreted as information design. The best way to understand and explain information design is based on its task: To present comparatively complex information in a simple, clear and understandable way, thus creating the basis for its effective communication.
The great attention that this design discipline is now receiving is primarily due to the changes in the media landscape: There are more and more communication channels and many new possibilities, such as online platforms, which make it necessary to process information and back it up with facts in a targeted manner. In addition, our knowledge is becoming increasingly diverse and complex thanks to the booming sciences - and this development also has repercussions for the transfer of information. In this context, it is important to define the term information design broadly: Graphics for the visualisation of statistical data are of course important, but on the other hand, a signage system, an event or public spaces can also be communicated using the means of info design.
Students who want to take a closer look at information design should be introduced to the subject via basics such as typography or the rules of classic corporate design. Uniformity and media adequacy are decisive for successful information design. However, ethical aspects are also relevant: The aim is to state facts without distortion and to correctly emphasise the focus of information.
On a technical level, it is crucial to determine the appropriate means and media for solving the respective communication task, to provide the most important information and to make the transfer of information as simple and comprehensible as possible within the framework of the communication concept. Information design therefore requires both: classic and advanced design expertise as well as comprehensive conceptual and analytical skills with regard to technologies, media and society.

About this Website
Information design has increasingly established itself as a field of study in the curricula of design education over the past few decades. On the one hand, as a practical and theoretical field with its various areas of work, and on the other hand, as a programmatic approach that is increasingly sought after by students as a relevant and meaningful professional perspective. This website provides an overview of the currently offered programs at various universities.
