Information Design at the UdK
The Information Design class at UdK Berlin is a specialized course dedicated to the artistic exploration of socially relevant and content-driven topics. We provide a space for experimental and methodical approaches to developing innovative solutions that inspire and motivate action. Our project-based curriculum allows students to explore and deepen a wide spectrum of methodical and experimental design approaches. We focus on various fields of work that interact in diverse configurations:
Documentation and Editorial
We research and transform realities into words and images.
Visualization
We make complex data understandable through diagrams, graphics, and images.
Signage
We design graphic solutions for spaces that provide orientation.
Visual Language
Using pictograms and images, we overcome communication barriers.
Images of Knowledge
We develop visual narratives that simplify complex topics.
Bachelor’s Program
The bachelor’s program offers a broad, interdisciplinary, and experimental insight into the fields of work. We provide the space and opportunity to develop individual positions and aesthetic expressions. We believe this is essential for creatively pioneering new paths.
Master’s Program
The master’s program allows for deeper specialization and focus on a self-selected project—within a group of students with very similar interests. Additionally, the Information Design class incorporates a unique interface with the social sciences in the Visual Society Program (VISOP) during the master’s studies. Students collaborate with researchers from the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), gaining insights into the methods and fields of work of each other's disciplines. Together, the working groups develop new methods to make social contexts visible and understandable.
"Meisterschüler" Program
After completing the regular degree, the Meisterschüler program offers a further, highly individualized deepening. It is aimed at developing an outstanding project work.
About the UdK
The Berlin University of the Arts offers over 70 predominantly artistic courses of study, organized into four faculties. Students study subject-specific courses and participate in inter-faculty offerings and a variety of collaborations. The Visual Communication program primarily consists of subject-specific design areas, the 'classes.' After a foundational year, students choose one of the classes each semester to complete their project studies, supplemented by elective and compulsory offerings from laboratories, workshops, and sciences. This allows for either a broadly diversified or highly focused study; up to two-thirds of the studies can be completed in one class, such as Information Design.

About this Website
Information design has increasingly established itself as a field of study in the curricula of design education over the past few decades. On the one hand, as a practical and theoretical field with its various areas of work, and on the other hand, as a programmatic approach that is increasingly sought after by students as a relevant and meaningful professional perspective. This website provides an overview of the currently offered programs at various universities.

AG Info?
The Information Design Working Group, or AG Info for short, is an informal arrangement among universities that provides an overview of the range of different programs – from specific to holistic, but always with the goal of further advancing information design in research, teaching, and transfer as a forward-looking factor in design.
