The term information design describes design processes and their results that are aimed at economic knowledge acquisition and sustainable knowledge gain for the user. Information design has the task of translating complex, abstract and otherwise inaccessible information into clear visual representations: as static illustrative infographics as well as explorable interactive data visualizations.
Information designers research, plan, conceptualize and design these visual explanations. These visual explanatory pieces: e.g. innovative orientation and guidance systems, illustrative infographics and data visualizations for news media, publishers or companies, instructional manuals or sign and information systems.
Information designers can think analytically, create scientifically sound concepts and design innovatively. They are familiar with the underlying theories, principles and methods of information design and combine visual forms of presentation to create effective knowledge images in the form of factual, numerical and cartographic graphics.
They are familiar with the diverse history of information design as well as current trends and developments, relevant players, tools, publications, competitions and exhibitions. Information Design at the Faculty of Design at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences focuses on the practice-oriented subject areas of media, science, business, culture, medicine and sport. Interdisciplinary projects and professional discourse with partners from business, research and universities are pursued intensively both nationally and internationally. Due to its factual orientation and high communication skills, Information Design is a subject area with excellent profiling and career opportunities.

About this Website
Information design has increasingly established itself as a field of study in the curricula of design education over the past few decades. On the one hand, as a practical and theoretical field with its various areas of work, and on the other hand, as a programmatic approach that is increasingly sought after by students as a relevant and meaningful professional perspective. This website provides an overview of the currently offered programs at various universities.
